My journey into becoming a leader started when I was a boy scout, leading both teams and the troop in various adventures, camping trips and community service programs.
As an adult, it took many years to discover that I am more than an engineer. More than a project manager. More than an entrepreneur…
I am a leader!
A leader of self from the 'Inside Out' first!
And with that realization came the understanding that everyone is really a leader. Someone is, or potentially can “follow" your example. This makes it critical that you understand that you are, or should be, a leader of self before a leader of others!
Over the past 30+ years I have helped develop strong engineering departments, co-founded an engineering and project management consultancy firm and a few other small business ventures along the way.
As with most things done without a mentor, it took a while to understand what leading others was really all about.
Having successfully managed large projects with extensive and diverse teams to overcome challenges and setbacks, I discovered it takes a tribe to bring success and client satisfaction to the table of leadership.
What I discovered was that being a leader is really about an inside out process of transformation: figuring out how to lead myself first, growing my mental fitness and self-awareness; the result being in how I showed up differently…better…and therefore being able to lead others better.
That’s what I consider "true influence".
The more mentally fit I became, the better my performance and attitudes towards others became and the greater influence I had.
I believe leadership is about influence and empowering people to thrive and become the best they can be…leading from the ‘Inside Out’ first. That takes mental fitness, and especially after the last 2 years we have all experienced.
I have always tried to help and empower others where I could. I created Soaring with Eagles to help you, as a leader, create a foundation for your leadership from clarity and authenticity; to have a vision to become a servant leader that produces performance from purpose; and empower a tribe who wants to align with you.
